A recent survey of European companies shows that the majority now feel that the benefits of open source software outweigh the risks. In addition, the survey showed that firms in Europe are much more willing to try open source software due to the lower total cost of software ownership.

Following continental Europe, the UK came in second. 43% of companies in the United Kingdom are using open source software.

The survey found that the number of firms that believe the benefits outweigh the costs of open source software from 45.3% in 2007 to 54% at this year’s convention. There are still barriers to implementation in a number of firms. One of the biggest barriers is the lack of in-house skills to implement open source software. In addition, there are lingering fears of on-going tech support.
