Open source software is nothing new. In fact, many developers have been working to bring open source software to the mainstream market for many years. While some may think that the open source community is nothing but a bunch of geeks, this could not be further from the truth. Times have changed over the last decade, causing companies to seek out information on open source software solutions.
Open source’s growth may be attributed to the various benefits that it provides users. The low cost is perhaps the biggest concern for large companies, however, the flexibility is another big plus.
While open source developers used to struggle to find a way into the marketplace, the market is now seeking out open source developers. This trend alone should cause world wide software users to take note. As developments continue for open source software and more people begin to see the true benefits of the software, there is no doubt that these innovations will catch the eye of more than just geeks.

A new study released by O’Reilly Research shows that there are multiple reasons for the steady rise of open source software. The top six reasons include quality, cost, security, agility, scale, decreased vendor lock-in, and innovation.
Open source software has the ability to decrease vendor lock-in, allowing open source software users to avoid the dramatics of many vendors. Locked-in vendors do not have to worry about being easily replaced and turn this confidence into expensive upgrade and maintenance fees.
The low cost is a significant consideration for users of open source software, as well as the innovation of the software. Companies are able to shape and mold their software to better fit the specific needs of the company, something that is simply impossible when using closed source software.
