Open Source and Macs

July 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Many people are familiar with the practice of using either a Mac or PC at work and the opposite type of computer at home. When searching for applications that will properly work across both Macs and Windows, many quickly discover that the applications for Macs are incredibly underdeveloped.

Experts in the field suggest that many open source software developers are inclined to create applications for operating systems that they are more familiar with, which is most commonly Linux or Windows.

While open source projects continue to gain popularity, it has yet to be seen if Apple will be able to aid in the development of this software for Macs. Experts suggest that the development of open source software that is compatible with Macs has just now become an interest for developers.

Is Open Source a Good Alternative?

July 8th, 2008 · No Comments

There has been a lot of talk lately about the new types of open source software that has been developed in the last few years, but is it just that: talk. Is this software a good alternative or is it just a bunch of talk? I think it depends on what you are looking for in your computer.

If you are looking for a program code that is open to your discretion, then open source might be the option for you. If you are not prepared to work with this type of software and make changes as need or you feel that the software is fine the way it is, then you might want to stay with closed source software.

It really depends on what your situation is. If you are willing to take the time to work with your open source software then this may be the option for you because it is very interactive software. If you just need the software for a few minor daily tasks then open source software might not be the best option.

Understanding Open Source Software

July 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Open source software is a different type of software that has been created. This type of program is under a special license. This special license allows anyone to access the program code and the executable program. By using this program, it opens many windows for people using software because this software allows you to customize anything with the program codes for your own use.

This program has become a popular option because of its ability to let the user determine many different options to the applications of the software. Unlike the closed Source Software, this type of program allows users to changes pieces of the coding to fit to their every use needs.

Over the past few years, developers have been working to create this software that is rewritable by any user and by trial and error have found that people respond better to this type of software.

Open-Source Transforms Software Market

June 25th, 2008 · No Comments

A prominent research firm, IDC, has declared the development of open-source software is one of the most important long-term trends in the software industry in the last twenty years.  In research done by the firm, 71% of developers worldwide use open-source software.  About half of respondents, which totaled 5,000, currently utilize open-source software in the production phase at their companies.

For technology companies selling open-source software, a balance must occur between developer needs and generating enough revenue to continue product development.  Currently, companies sell subscription models, in which developers fix bugs, as well as hybrid products.  The sale of hybrid software is expected to account for about 80% of all releases in the entire software industry over the next four years.

Large Corporation Adopts Open-Source

June 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Adobe, a large, established company, recently adopted an open-source strategy.  Some people consider this a controversial change because releasing software’s code into the community allows any trade secrets or special company tricks to be immediately discovered.

However, several advantages exist for large corporations.  First of all, the market demand for open-source is increasing.  Additionally, development costs are lowered and companies can take advantage of the open-source community’s ability to improve product code.  Finally, through an expanded user community, companies reach broader networks.
